Sparks flew when Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and former domestic policy adviser under the Biden administration Neera Tanden clashed over a ridiculous accusation.
It all started on the Monday night edition of CNN Newsnight with Abby Phillip when Tanden bizarrely claimed that Lawler voted against a reconciliation bill with a childcare tax credit in it. The only problem? Lawler wasn’t even in Congress that year.
Watch:
The discussion revolved around President Donald Trump’s administration and its plans to encourage United States citizens to have more kids. Tanden immediately launched into a rant on how she supports all child tax credits before blaming Lawler for voting against a bill that was debated a year before he was even sworn into Congress.
“I support childcare. I support the childcare tax credit. I support the child tax credit. A lot of Republicans have voted against the child tax credit,” Tanden said, adding that she believes it’s a “little weird” for the government to be involved in female menstrual cycles.
“And I think if a Democratic administration would do something like that, we’d hear a lot of complaints about it. But, you know, I totally agree that we should do a lot more as an administration to support families. And one way to do that is childcare. Another way to do that is paid leave. And I think it’s unfortunate that conservatives, Republicans have voted against those very ideas in Congress,” she continued.
“Actually, not. But nice try,” Lawler responded.
“You voted against the reconciliation bill that had actual childcare in it. You did. And the child tax credit,” Tanden shot back.
“When did I vote against that? When did I vote against that?” the congressman pressed.
“You voted against it back, way back in 2022,” the former Biden adviser said confidently.
“I wasn’t elected until ’22. So, I didn’t come to Congress until ’23. But thank you. So, you apologize for lying?” he asked.
“I’m sorry,” Tanden said, before insisting she “didn’t lie.”
“You did lie,” Lawler chuckled. “I have supported the child tax credit. I have co-sponsored legislation to that effect. I have also co-sponsored and led on legislation with respect to IVF access, codifying IVF access into law.”
“Okay, great. I think that’s wonderful,” Tanden replied.
