Andrew Cuomo Denied Millions as NYC Slams the Door on Campaign Fund Request

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s campaign for New York City mayor hit a financial snag this week when the city’s Campaign Finance Board (CFB) denied his request for $2.5 million in public matching funds.

As reported by Newsmax, the denial was based on the campaign’s failure to meet the eligibility threshold for qualified donations and what the board described as a high number of documentation errors.

According to the CFB, candidates seeking matching funds must raise at least $250,000 from a minimum of 1,000 city residents and provide accurate documentation for those contributions.

The board stated that Cuomo’s campaign failed to meet those standards at the time of review.

Cuomo’s spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, attributed the issue to a technical problem with the campaign’s software and said corrective steps were being taken.

“We have since fully addressed the software issue and have complied with all requirements and will be submitting the proper documentation to the Board within the one week grace period the board allows to remedy technical issues.”

City & State reported that Cuomo’s campaign had raised more than $1.5 million in the first two weeks after he launched his run, and another $1 million in the month that followed, according to figures cited by Politico.

As of last month, the campaign reported $1.2 million in cash on hand. A super PAC supporting Cuomo has separately raised an additional $5 million.

The CFB’s decision does not mark the end of Cuomo’s effort to obtain the public funds. His campaign has until May 12 to submit corrected documentation.

On Sunday, the campaign sent out an email to supporters urging them to complete paperwork to help qualify their donations for matching funds.

“Please look for a separate email coming from Cuomo For NYC Via DocuSign today. We need you to complete the form included in this additional email, TODAY IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.”

Cuomo is not the only high-profile candidate facing financial scrutiny. Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent in the upcoming election, was also denied matching funds due to reported irregularities in his campaign’s bookkeeping.

While five other mayoral candidates were approved for matching funds, Cuomo and Adams will have to resolve their respective issues to secure the city’s public financing ahead of the election.
