Ex-British Transport Police Cling On to £110,000-Worth of Mobile Phones in Just One Year
Back in February, British Transport Police were wringing their hands over a lack of funding, warning that dozens of stations would close, staff would be slashed, and a hiring freeze was in full swing. While the frontline feels the squeeze, UK DOGE has been uncovering how some of their cash has gone down the drain…
UK DOGE’s The Waste Files research has discovered that departing British Transport Police staff have clung on to 242 taxpayer-funded mobile phones between 2022 and 2024 – at an eye-watering cost of £120,000. Somehow, 222 of those phones – worth £110,000 – were not returned in the last year alone. Out of 267 phones issued, 83% were never handed back. For that you could:
- Hire 4 British Transport Police officers.
- Buy 1,875 police batons.
- Buy 10 unmarked police cars.
The taxpayer may have a view on which should be prioritised. UK DOGE recommends costs are cut here…
