Flip-Flopping Dems Wanted Cuomo Out, Now They Want Him Running New York

A surprising political reversal is playing out in New York City as ten elected officials who previously called for Andrew Cuomo’s resignation are now endorsing his campaign for mayor.

As reported by The New York Post, Cuomo, the former governor of New York who stepped down in August 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct and scrutiny over his handling of COVID-19 nursing home deaths, is now seeing support from lawmakers who once condemned his actions.

Out of the 28 elected officials who have publicly endorsed Cuomo’s mayoral bid, ten of them had previously demanded or welcomed his resignation as governor. The group includes several state senators, assembly members, and New York City council members.

Queens state Senator Toby Ann Stavisky previously stated on August 3, 2021:

“It is clear that there is a pattern of unacceptable and troubling behavior. The governor should resign or face impeachment.”

She has since reversed course and is now backing Cuomo’s mayoral campaign.

The allegations that led to Cuomo’s resignation were detailed in a report commissioned by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, which substantiated claims of sexual harassment by multiple women. Cuomo has denied all allegations.

Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who currently chairs the Brooklyn Democratic Party, is another Cuomo supporter today.

At the time of his resignation, she said Cuomo’s “resignation was in the interest of the people of this state. In this disquieting time, there is some relief in seeing repercussions for Cuomo’s shameful conduct.”

Brooklyn Councilwoman Farah Louis also once welcomed Cuomo’s departure, saying in an August 11, 2021 statement:

“Governor Cuomo’s actions were deeply wrong. His decision to resign was the right one as it was clear that he could no longer lead New York State effectively.”

She now endorses his return to public office.

Other lawmakers who have shifted their stance include state Senator James Sanders, who originally called for Cuomo’s resignation; Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres, who at the time said, “Cuomo’s resignation is in the best interest of New York State,” but now says:

“I predict the comeback story of the 2025 election will be the resurrection of Andrew Cuomo. America loves a comeback, New York loves a comeback.”

Queens Congressman Gregory Meeks, state Senator Joe Addabbo, Assemblyman David Weprin, and Assemblyman Ed Braunstein all issued past statements supporting Cuomo’s resignation but have now joined the list of endorsers for his mayoral run.

The Cuomo campaign defended the support, saying the former governor has been cleared in many of the cases related to both the harassment accusations and nursing home policies. Cuomo campaign spokesman Richard Azzopardi stated:

“New York is in crisis – a crisis of affordability, of quality of life, and of leadership and Governor Cuomo is the only person in this race with the proven track record of results to tackle these issues head on. Since the beginning, we said all of this was political and wasn’t going anywhere, and four years later that has all borne out.”

Critics of the turnaround, including Erica Vladimer of the Sexual Harassment Working Group, said:

“Electeds’ support for Cuomo is a slap-in-the-face betrayal to government workers everywhere, including their own staff. It’s cowardly for anyone who rightfully spoke up against Cuomo four years ago to now say ‘Ho hum, second chances, let the voters decide, etc.’”

As Cuomo mounts his political comeback, the support of his former critics highlights a dramatic shift in New York politics, raising questions about accountability, consistency, and the future of city leadership.
