Elon Musk will continue to advise the Trump administration after completing his temporary tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Vice President JD Vance confirmed during an appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends on Thursday.
As reported by The New York Post, Musk, who was brought on board to lead DOGE as a special government employee, is expected to conclude his service on May 30, the 130th day of President Donald Trump’s current term.
Federal regulations cap special government employee service at 130 consecutive days.

Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’
“Of course, he’s going to continue to be an adviser,” Vance said in response to reports from several media outlets suggesting a rift between Musk and the administration.
“Fundamentally, Elon is going to remain a friend and an adviser of both me and the president — and he’s done a lot of good things.”
DOGE, created under the Trump administration to streamline government and reduce waste, has been one of the administration’s primary tools for cutting bureaucratic spending. According to Vance, Musk’s role was never meant to be permanent.
“Elon came in, and we said, ‘We need you to make government more efficient, we need you to shrink the incredible fat bureaucracy that thwarts the will of the American people but also costs way too much money.’ We said, ‘That’s going to take about six months’ — and that’s what Elon signed up for.”

Despite Musk’s impending departure from the department, Vance emphasized that both DOGE and Musk’s involvement with the administration will continue in different forms.

“The work of DOGE is not even close to done. The work of Elon is not even close to done,” he stated. “DOGE has got a lot of work to do … that work is going to continue after Elon leaves.”
In a separate interview on Fox News last week, Musk acknowledged the 130-day limit and said, “I think we will have accomplished most of the work required to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion within that time frame.”
Musk had also told investors in February that his expected time working within the Trump White House would be around four months.
Two sources close to the White House confirmed that Musk’s final day leading DOGE would be May 30.
Since the start of his tenure, Musk has overseen significant cuts at several federal agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Education, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Social Security Administration.
“You look at all of the fraudulent grants that they found,” Vance said Thursday as he pointed to the impact of Musk’s reforms.

“You look at people who are 150 years old who are fraudulently collecting Social Security payments. You see, our Social Security system, 40% of the people who are calling in are actually committing fraud. That means the 60% who need their Social Security checks are waiting in line.”
Vance added that while the initial goals of DOGE have made progress, the deeper structural issues within the federal bureaucracy would take more time to fully address.
“People don’t realize how fast and uncontrolled the bureaucracy was. We started to chip away at it, but there’s a lot of work to do. It’s not going to happen all in six months. It’s going to take a long and committed effort,” he said.

Despite media speculation, the Trump administration appears committed to continuing its partnership with Musk in a less formal advisory role once his DOGE term ends.
