‘I Beat Trump’—Now He’s Eyeing California’s Top Spot [WATCH]

Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra officially announced on Wednesday that he will run for governor of California in 2026.

Becerra, who served as California’s attorney general from 2017 to 2021, as well as representing the state’s 34th congressional district from 2013 to 2017, made the announcement in a social media post.

“As AG I took on Trump – and won. As HHS Secretary, I took on Big Pharma – and won. It’s time to do it again for California. Let’s rebuild the California Dream for everyone.”

Becerra’s announcement marks the beginning of what could be a competitive Democratic primary for the California governorship. He is currently facing several notable candidates, including former Rep. Katie Porter, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Each of these candidates brings a distinct political background and policy platform, but Becerra’s record as a former attorney general and cabinet secretary could make him a strong contender in the race.

Additionally, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who served as California’s attorney general and U.S. senator, is still considering whether she will enter the race. A recent Emerson College poll suggests that Harris would have strong support, with 57% of voters backing her if she decides to run for governor.

Becerra’s time as attorney general was marked by his opposition to several of former President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly in areas like immigration and healthcare.

His tenure as Health and Human Services Secretary under President Joe Biden saw him battle major pharmaceutical companies and advocate for expanding access to healthcare.

While the California gubernatorial race is still years away, Becerra’s announcement has already made waves in the state’s political landscape. With a crowded field of Democratic candidates, the race is expected to be closely watched as the 2026 election approaches.
