Economist Steve Moore says Trump could free US from other nations’ ‘high fariffs’

Daily Caller News Foundation

Economist Steve Moore argued on Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s forthcoming tariffs could free America from other countries’ lofty tariffs.

Trump is set to unveil the specifics of his “Liberation Day” trade agenda Wednesday in the White House’s Rose Garden, according to CNN.  Moore, on “Wake Up America,” said the current tariffs on the United States are unfair and that Trump’s may pressure other nations toward balanced trade practices.

“I’m as eager to hear the president’s announcement as anyone. I think that what we’re going to hear is a lot about this idea of reciprocal tariffs … The idea that the United States does have the lowest tariffs virtually in the world,” Moore said. “And as Trump has been saying, that these countries are ripping us off. They’re not playing by the rules of the game. It’s not a level playing field. And I’m a free trade guy. I believe that it’s beneficial [for] the world to lower tariffs as much as possible.”

“If Trump’s policies work out here, I do believe that at the end of the day, that there will be a lowering of tariffs around the world. Our tariffs are about 3 or 4 or 5% and many other countries are above 20%,” he continued. “And so that just is something we can’t live with and, at the end of the day, this could be a liberation from those high tariffs that these countries are charging American-made, whether its cars or whether its our manufacturing items or whether it’s technology, it simply isn’t a fair trading system right now.”

Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico in March, along with a 50% tax on Canadian steel and aluminum. The president cited the countries’ roles in enabling illegal immigration and fentanyl to enter the U.S.

Trump subsequently delayed the tariffs on Mexico until April 2 after a March 6 phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president also hit China with 20% tariffs for its role in the fentanyl epidemic ravaging the U.S.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in a Tuesday X post that his nation has terminated all existing tariffs on U.S. imports.

Host Sharla McBride asked Moore if he anticipates additional nations following Israel’s suit.

“I do,” the economist answered, adding, “I do think that these countries are going to be forced to lower their tariffs because every country in the world needs access to America’s massive consumer market.”

“The issue really is how long will this take? Trump has said this will be some short-term pain for long-term gain. I agree with him on that,” he said. “It’s just a question of how much short-term pain are we going to feel until these other countries start to be more cooperative.”
