President Donald Trump has his eyes set on Greenland and it appears he’s not interested in taking no for an answer.
Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, rejected the idea that the United States may assume control over the country at Trump’s request.
“President Trump says that the United States is getting Greenland. Let me be clear: the United States won’t get that. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future,” he declared in response to the American president’s recent comments on the matter.
On Saturday, Trump told NBC News that the U.S. will “get Greenland. Yeah, 100%” adding that there is a “good possibility that we could do it without military force … I don’t take anything off the table.”
Neilson was sworn in on Friday, shortly before the arrival of Vice President JD Vance and his delegation. While in the country, Vance accused the government of “underinvesting” in their people.
“Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.”
Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen issued a rebuke of the comments in a statement of his own.
“We are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it’s being delivered This is not how you speak to your close allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies,” he said.
