Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) made headlines Monday during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, where she discussed her efforts to train Americans on how to resist what she described as a potential “dictatorship” under President Donald Trump.
The remarks were part of a broader conversation about Jayapal’s “resistance lab” training, which aims to prepare citizens to oppose the erosion of democracy.
Jayapal explained the rationale behind the training sessions, stating, “It appears that the Trump administration is willing to ignore judicial decisions and so that brings us to you in this room. It brings us to the people that is really, the bulwark, the wall against the crumbling of democracy.”

She framed her training as a direct response to what she believes are the threats posed by Trump’s administration, calling it a crucial defense against the potential collapse of democratic institutions.
Rachel Maddow, in response, asked Jayapal to explain the concept of the “resistance lab” in more detail.
“Help me understand this idea of the resistance lab and what you’re talking about in practical terms at these events,” Maddow inquired.
Jayapal elaborated, explaining the core mission of the training program: “What we decided is that we really need to help Americans understand what happens when democracies fall when dictators take over. We’ve been pretty complacent in America. We haven’t had to really deal with this in any real way. And now I think people need to understand what are the lessons from other countries and working with experts who have studied democratic backsliding in countries around the world and the resistance movements that emerged to take on that democratic backsliding.”

The focus of Jayapal’s resistance lab is to educate participants on the ways democratic systems can falter and the strategies used by resistance movements worldwide to combat such authoritarian shifts.
She explained that the curriculum they developed helps people understand the dynamics of power structures and the importance of confronting the “pillars of support” that uphold a leader’s power.
“We help people understand, how do you go after the pillars of support? Not necessarily the person at the top but the pillars of support that allow that person to continue to have power?” Jayapal stated.
Additionally, Jayapal’s training involves shifting the stance of passive opponents to active supporters of removing what she sees as a dictatorship.
“How do you shift allies from being sort of passive opponents to being active supporters of taking down a dictatorship?” she asked, underscoring the tactical approach she promotes in the resistance lab.
The conversation highlighted Jayapal’s view that democracy is under threat in the U.S. and that citizens need to be educated on how to effectively resist and fight back against potential authoritarianism.
The resistance lab, as envisioned by Jayapal, is designed to empower people with the knowledge and tools to recognize the warning signs of democratic decline and take action to preserve democratic values.
While Jayapal’s statements on MSNBC have sparked debate, her resistance lab reflects her ongoing commitment to opposing the policies and influence of the Trump administration.
The idea of training citizens to resist what she perceives as an authoritarian threat continues to be a central theme in Jayapal’s political rhetoric and activism.
