Jasmine Crockett Hides Behind Police Officer When Approached By Reporter In Capitol

Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett hid behind a police officer when confronted with a question, according to footage from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Do you regret your earlier comments you made about Governor Greg Abbott?” Daily Caller News Foundation reporter Myles Morell asks Crockett, 43, in the video. A police officer then steps between the congresswoman and the camera as she enters an elevator without acknowledging the question, according to the footage.

This comes after Crockett referred to Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels” during a speech Monday at the Human Rights Campaign in Los Angeles. (GOP Rep Says He Will Introduce Resolution To Censure Jasmine Crockett Over ‘Hot Wheels’ Comments)

“Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now. And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot ass mess, honey,” she said in her speech to the LGBTQ+ advocacy group.

Abbott, 67, has been paralyzed from the waist down since he was 26 years old when a tree fell on his back while he was running, according to his website. Republican Texas Rep. Randy Weber announced Tuesday that he intended to introduce a resolution to censure her over her comment about the governor.

Crockett has previously supported the “Defund the police” movement, according to a speech posted to Facebook in May 2021 when Crockett served in the Texas House of Representatives.

“‘Defund the Police.’ Let’s have a real conversation about what it means, because those who have never sat down with one activist somehow choose to define a movement that was born out of police brutality,” she said in the speech.

Crockett appeared to be criticizing Texas House Bill 1900, which aimed to financially penalize large cities if they cut police budgets. The bill was in response to the death of George Floyd the subsequent riots and calls to defund the police.

“The defund movement seeks to actually bring about healing and finally invest in our communities to make them safer, addressing the root causes of crime. And by allowing the professionals to do their respective jobs. Defund is about finally being smart on crime. Defund is about lightening the load for our officers of all the things they didn’t sign up for. Defund is about finally being fiscally responsible when it comes to policing the state,” she continued.

Crockett wrote in the video’s caption that the movement was a response to “injustice and inaction.” She claimed diverting police funding to other public services would reduce crime and the burdens police officers face.

A May 2020 YouGov poll revealed that only sixteen percent of Americans supported defunding the police. Sixty-five percent said they opposed the proposal while nineteen precent said they were unsure.

Jasmine Crockett’s office did not respond to request for comment from the Daily Caller.
