Florida returns $878M to federal govt. after DeSantis meets with DOGE boss Elon Musk

A single meeting with Elon Musk had Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) reporting a whopping sum of saved taxpayer money that once had “ideological strings attached.”

As he did with taking preemptive action to advance President Donald Trump’s immigration policy to begin the new administration, America’s governor was leading by example from the Sunshine State on how to trim the government. Toward that end, DeSantis announced late Friday that a visit from the Department of Government Efficiency’s leader had meant nearly $880 million was heading back to the federal coffers.

Sharing a message that had been transmitted to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the governor posted on X, “For years, Florida has been trying to return federal funds to the federal government due to the ideological strings attached by the Biden Administration–but they couldn’t even figure out how to accept it. Today, I met with @elonmusk and the DOGE team, and we got this done in the same day. Other states should follow Florida in supporting DOGE’s efforts!”

Tacking on to the post, Musk captioned DeSantis’ message by stating, “Almost a billion dollars of your taxpayer money saved.”

The announcement from the governor came less than four weeks after the governor had revealed his state had formed its own DOGE task force to “further eliminate waste within state government, save taxpayers money, and ensure accountability in Florida.”

“Florida has set the standard for fiscally conservative governance, and our new Florida DOGE task force will do even more to serve the people of Florida,” he’d said in a statement at the time. “It will eliminate redundant boards and commissions, review state university and college operations and spending, utilize artificial intelligence to further examine state agencies to uncover hidden waste, and even audit the spending habits of local entities to shine the light on waste and bloat.”

Providing an example of the success Florida had had under his leadership, DeSantis’ press release cited $3.5 billion saved in 2024 while boasting that state debt had been paid down 41%.

The governor’s announcement came within a week of Congress passing legislation to fund the federal government through September that many had criticized for seemingly canceling out the efforts of the DOGE team that continued to cut tens of billions of dollars on their path to a goal of $2 trillion in savings by July 4, 2026.

It also came as he slammed the federal legislators for failing to take necessary actions to codify Trump’s executive orders into law.

“Congress can limit the jurisdiction of the court,” DeSantis told Fox News host Laura Ingraham as judicial activists continued making rulings against Trump’s executive authority. “That is plain in the Constitution. It doesn’t require 67 votes in the Senate. You can attach it to a CR, you can attach it to a must-pass bill.”

“They’re not even trying any of this stuff. We knew these leftist judges were gonna do what they’re doing. Everybody predicted that, Pres. Trump knew that…and what are they, they’re on two weeks of vacation now. Really?” decried the governor. “That must be nice. I think they got a lot of work to do.”

Many agreed on that point as they lauded DeSantis for taking steps necessary to advance the president’s Make America Great Again policies.
