As it turns out there may be a reason the taxman no longer bothers picking up the phone – last year 44,000 customers got cut off with no warning after sitting on hold for over an hour. Last month a whopping 1,521 HMRC staff were working on compressed hours four day weeks – up from 1,311 at the time of the election. Something for tax minister James Murray to work on in his reforms…
