Tory MP Sir Geoffrey Cox was paid a whopping £75,000 to advise the Mauritius director of public prosecutions between July 6 and September 30, according to The Times. The Chagos surrender deal was announced on 3 October…

Local reports say that Cox discussed the deal with Mauritian prime minister Navin Ramgoolam, who also consulted “other legal advisers who defend Mauritian interests”. During the Mauritian election campaign, Cox appeared at a rally with Ramgoolam saying there was “a great deal of international attention to this election … particularly in the United Kingdom…partly because of the Chagos Islands”. The two have known each other for a while, with Ramgoolam being Cox’s pupil when he studied law in the UK…

In November, Cox enjoyed a business-class trip to Mauritius, courtesy of Ramgoolam. Flights and luxury accommodation totalled a cool £13,302. Meanwhile, Cox’s firm, Withers, was hired to advise the Mauritian government on the deal. Cox insists he wasn’t involved in negotiations, though he does rake in £293,400 a year from Withers and has pocketed an extra £133,652.65 since 2023. Just last month, Cox bagged another £9,375 for advising Dentons, a Mauritian legal outfit lobbying on the Chagos case since 1997. Murky waters…
