The Trump administration isn’t playing games when it comes to protecting women’s sports.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has temporarily cut off federal funding to the entire University of Maine System (UMS) after Democratic Gov. Janet Mills refused to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order banning biological males from competing in women’s sports, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.

Mills, a staunch left-wing governor, has been at odds with Trump over this issue for months. Their clash came to a head during a heated exchange at the White House in February when Trump called her out for undermining women’s sports protections.

Instead of backing down, Mills doubled down—threatening legal action against the president rather than enforcing fair play for female athletes.
The USDA responded swiftly, launching an investigation into Maine’s education department to determine whether UMS was in violation of Title IX, the federal law designed to protect women from discrimination in education and athletics.
By Monday, the department had taken decisive action, halting all payments to UMS.
According to a statement from UMS, an internal email from the USDA’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer instructed officials to temporarily stop issuing any funds to both the University of Maine System and Columbia University.

The funding freeze isn’t just about sports—it also extends to Columbia over its failure to protect Jewish students amid escalating antisemitic campus protests.

“This pause is temporary in nature while USDA evaluates if it should take any follow-on actions related to prospective Title VI or Title IX violations,” the USDA message reportedly stated. “Please take any necessary actions to effectuate this direction from leadership. This pause will remain in effect until further notice.”
Mills’ refusal to enforce the executive order came after the Maine Principals’ Association signaled that it would continue allowing males to compete in female sports divisions, despite widespread concerns.
Not long after, a biological male athlete dominated a high school girls’ competition in the state, sparking outrage.
President Trump signed the executive order on February 5, re-establishing protections for women’s sports that had been rolled back during Joe Biden’s presidency.
Under Biden’s leadership, the administration attempted to rewrite Title IX to accommodate transgender athletes, a move that was widely condemned for dismantling women’s rights and creating unfair advantages for biological men in female competitions.

The policy faced legal challenges and was ultimately abandoned.
Women’s sports have been under siege ever since Democrats prioritized radical gender ideology over fairness and safety. Female athletes across the country have lost scholarships, titles, and opportunities—all in the name of “inclusion.”
In some cases, they’ve even suffered serious injuries when forced to compete against stronger, faster male athletes.
A University of Maine System spokesperson confirmed that they are currently unable to share further details. Meanwhile, the USDA has yet to respond to media inquiries about the funding freeze.
Trump’s latest move sends a clear message: the federal government will not bankroll institutions that refuse to stand up for fairness in women’s sports. The question is—how long will blue-state leaders like Mills keep bowing to radical activists instead of protecting their female athletes?
