Tuesday’s presidential address to the joint session of Congress, the first-year equivalent to a State of the Union speech, was the highlight of Donald Trump’s political career.

It might have been the highlight of any presidential term in this century.

It was the longest, most boisterous, probably most partisan, and almost certainly most triumphant address to the legislative branch in modern American history and very likely in the mass-media age.

The speech should have been a triumphant one for the whole country. And for most of America, it surely was.

But not for everybody.

A few moments after cane-wielding imbecile Al Green, a congressman representing the slums of Houston, Texas, was escorted out of the House chamber for relentless heckling and the brandishing of a walking stick reminiscent of that of Robert DeNiro’s satanic character in Angel Heart, Trump noted that there was nothing he could say, no achievement or triumph or universal goal he could remark upon, that would induce the Democrats to give applause.

That was a bit of genius by Trump’s speechwriters because it was bait the Democrats refused to take.

And they refused to take it for nearly two hours.

Among the things these people could not applaud were…

• American farmers, as Trump cheerleaded their efforts and announced policies intended to retake their dominant position in the American marketplace;
• U.S. Manufacturing;
• Small businesses — in fact, as Trump was touting policies to encourage small business growth, Green stood up and delivered a vociferous harangue which brought out the gavel from House Speaker Mike Johnson;
• Tax cuts;
• Catching terrorists, including the animal responsible for the Abbey Gate bombing in Kabul, which killed 13 American servicemembers amid Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from that country;
• Protecting women from mentally imbalanced men attempting to invade their sports teams;
• Murdered women, and Laken Riley in particular;
• Murdered children being memorialized by the naming of a wildlife refuge;
• Fallen police officers;
• >Steelworkers;
• Energy independence;
• Stopping drug cartels;
• Curbing the waste of tax dollars;
• A young man, the son of a slain police officer, being admitted to West Point;
• Corey Comperatore’s family;
• D.J. Daniel, a 13-year-old boy battling brain cancer who was named an honorary Secret Service agent; and
• The prospect of ending the Ukraine War after five years as Trump read a letter from Volodymyr Zelenskyy announcing he was willing to sign the mineral rights deal Trump had been negotiating with him at Trump’s earliest convenience.

That isn’t an exhaustive list.

Trump’s speech detailed a staggering litany of accomplishments. He was funny, engaging, commanding, and upbeat. There was a spirit of optimism and joy in the room that you had to work not to feel.

But they refused to feel it.

Today’s Democrat Party filed for divorce from the rest of America Tuesday night. They no longer participate in our national life in any way beyond their own horrific, miserable, deviant politics.

You saw the death of that party as a mainstream political entity on Tuesday night. It’s over for them. They’re political vermin — no message, no honor, no positivity, no goodwill.

And in comparison Trump is now a colossus standing over American politics. Trump’s agenda is now America’s agenda.

It’s going to be a very interesting year.
