Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is saying ‘not with my soldiers’ to her European allies who want to send their soldiers to Ukraine’s defense
A proposal from France and the United Kingdom to help Ukraine out by sending European troops to assist, but Meloni isn’t about to jump into such an agreement without knowing more.
“Italy has expressed doubts regarding the proposal of France and the UK on sending European troops. I think it is very difficult to implement, I am not sure about its effectiveness, that’s why we announced that we will not send Italian soldiers to Ukraine,” she said to news station Rai1 TV.

She did say that all nations agree that they would like to see long-lasting peace for Ukraine and its people.
“After all, everyone has the same goal, to bring just peace to Ukraine, sustainable and lasting peace, I’d say final peace. Thus, the key issue here is how to build the peace that would include security guarantees for Ukraine,” she noted.
“This is not the kind of debate that is usually held in front of the cameras,” the Italian leader said of the recent tense exchange between United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
She also warned about letting the Ukraine issue divide the West ahead of a meeting of European leaders in London, saying “It is very, very important that we avoid the risk that the West divides.”
“We are all very committed about a goal that we all want to achieve, which is a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
On Sunday, Zelenskyy met with Meloni to discuss ending the ongoing war with Russia, accusing President Vladimir Putin of wanting to continue the conflict.
“No one is interested in the continuation and quick return of the war except for Putin,” he said. “Ukraine needs peace backed by reliable security guarantees.”
This was a point of contention in his talks with Trump, with Zelenskyy claiming the United States did not provide enough substantial security promises for him to agree to any deal drafted by the U.S. treasury.
